The subject of China is both broad and deep. With over three thousand years of history, a population well exceeding one billion, and a land mass approximately equal to that of the United States, China is a varied country, and many aspects of it are worthy of study.

What follows is just a brief introduction to some of the larger subject areas. In each case, we give what can only be considered a brief introduction, but hopefully enough information to give you a foundation from which to learn more. Whenever you study a language, it helps to have some background in the culture that has formed the language. In each of the following areas, there are links at the bottom where you can learn more about the subject on your own, and we encourage you to do so.
